Advice on Selecting a Therapist

If "you're expecting to go and pay up to a hundred and fifty, two hundred bucks an hour for someone to say, 'Gee, John, that's too bad,' you're going to waste your time and money.

"And my concern is that you may actually find somebody who will do that for you — and it will get you no place except sadder and poorer....

"A therapist doesn't have to be like you. You don't even have to like your therapist. And your therapist doesn't have to like you either. A therapist just holds the mirror up for you. They're only a tool....

"You want somebody who has the intellectual power, and the heart, and the courage to say, 'What do you want from me? Do you want anti-depressants? Do you want to talk about your parents? How do you make your life work for you?

"Because I, as a therapist, cannot undo anything that's happened to you. I may not even be able to understand it — nor is that necessary. Because my goal is not to sympathize with you, but to help you ... to get you out of this mess....

"Just find somebody who has the courage to stand up to you and say, 'Enough! What do you want? Let's work."
